Navigation

Overview

Texas State campus is known for its beauty, but for students, it’s also known for its confusing layout. At the beginning of each semester students are always on the hunt to find their classes and end up getting fed up with the campus instead of enjoying it.

Goal

The goal for this project was to make the navigation around Texas State easier for students. We want them to be able to find their classes and have less stress trying to get to where they need to go.

Design Challenge

How might we improve navigating around campus and making it easier for students to get to their destination?

Mission

Our mission is to ensure that students get to their destination by implementing maps/way-finding resources to change how students feel about navigating around campus, unlike the current map resources available to TXST students.

Hopes

Convenience and accessible

Efficient, easy, and time-saving

Less stress

Better than the current system

Clarity and understandability

Fears

How will this be done

Maybe be more confusing than helpful

Not knowing the best way to share navigation to where it is accessible to everyone

Making it simple yet efficient

Empathy Map

Feels

Tired from walking all over to find classes

Lost

Anxious/ Overwhelmed

Annoyed

Thinks

There’s got to be a better way

Why are the buildings so confusing to find

Are other people struggling or is it just me?

Says

Sorry I’m late

I couldn’t find this class

Can you help me find this building?

I’m lost

How long will it take me to get to building “x”?

Does

Runs late for class

Gets lost on campus

Tries to look for building on google maps

Downloads TXST app and then deletes it

Asks for directions

Survey

We asked Texas State students for their direct feedback on the topic of campus navigation. We got 32 people to fill out the survey and these are the results that we got.

Are you happy with the current navigation resources on campus?

How confident do you feel about navigating around the Texas State Campus without a map?

When navigating on campus do you use google maps, apple maps, physical maps, or the TXST app?

Would you prefer physical directions (such as posters, arrows, and maps throughout campus) or an app?

Current navigation resources

TXST App

Poor Directional Signage

Only Three Physical Maps

Inconsistent Building Signage

Potential Solutions

Physical Maps and Wayfinding

Directional sidewalk and stair decals on the ground

Path Signage

Building signs that are more visible and consistent

Printed Map Pamphlets

Technology/App

Digital Interactive Maps

Better In-App functionality

Examples of current map & way- finding systems

Building Signage is hard to find and only located on one side of the building

Shuttle map has a lot of information and can be overwhelming for new students trying to figure out the routes

App has 3 screens you can swipe through and the campus map is on the second screen and then shuttle route is on the last screen

Campus map is cluttered and hard to read
